Merv’s style could be described as “expressionistic” and somewhat abstract. His painting technique features intricate, layered brushstroke work. Whereas with many pieces of art it may be best to step further back to encompass the collective of the work, Merv urges you to get up close to his work, in order to better see the brushstrokes that went into the piece. The full measure of this brushstroke work can best be reproduced and seen on canvas, a thicker and coarser medium. A number of his paintings draw on photographs for inspiration, to which he then adds his unique interpretation and expressionist style.
The photos exemplify Merv’s artistic eye, and an appreciation for contrasts, particularly of light, colors, and shapes. An emotional connection to American roots and the fabric of life as he experienced it is a common thread.
